The Scholarships will go toward tuition fees to attend the XXI edition
of the MBA in International Business programme (September 2010 -
September 2011).

The Scholarships will cover up to 100% of the tuition fees (equivalent
to 24.000,00 EUR 20% V.A.T. included). The amount of the scholarships
will be discounted from the overall tuition fees. In case of course
abandonment or exclusion for any reason, no amount of the scholarship
will be paid or reimbursed.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

* Academic degree (or equivalent qualification) in any discipline.
* Good working knowledge of English (TOEFL certificate is recommended).
* Minimum 3 years of work experience.
* Less than 35 years of age as of September 2010.

MIB School of Management will award scholarships to the best
candidates on the basis of educational qualifications, professional
skills and motivation shown during the entrance interview.

Beijing Municipal Government has established the "Beijing Government Scholarship" for Beijing University of Chemical Technology to encourage and provide funding assistance for the outstanding foreign students to pursue degree study or further education in BUCT and use it to reward those highly meritorious students who are currently studying at the University. 3. Those who apply for advanced education of their specialties shall have the education background equivalent at least to bachelor degree or shall be the university students at the second year or above ;

4. Those who apply to undertake research at the BUCT as a visiting scholar shall hold master or above degrees, or possess the professional title of associate professor or above.

III. Application

2. Certificate of highest degree (must be notarized by notary in applicant's home country)

4. Two reference letters from teachers (applicant for master's and PhD degrees must provide reference letters from professors)

5. Resume and study plan (All the above material must be provided in Chinese or English)

The curatorial team of The 2nd Roma Pavilion – Call the Witness
announces its open call for artists, researchers and media archive.

This project, which will be presented in Venice in 2011, is
conceptualised and curated by the interdisciplinary collaborative
curatorial team: Suzana Milevska, Vladan Jeremic, Rena Raedle and
Enisa Eminovska.

The 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness is an interdisciplinary
collaboration that aims at fostering, producing and presenting
contemporary and new media art by Roma artists from different regions
and cultures. At the core of the project lies the concept of the
contemporary artist as an instantaneous witness of his/her time who is
not a passive viewer but rather acts as an active participant in
solidarity with the events and people that provoked his/her art work.
Such a phenomenon, wherein art becomes a potential agent of social
makeover, acquires a completely new prospect in this period of
digitalisation and globalisation, and may greatly affect Roma
communities.

We issue a "Call for Witnesses" to bring to light testimonies and
statements from artists and researchers that will address the
different situations of Roma communities throughout the world. The
question: who has control over the means of representation and has the
power to promote the dominant cultural and moral values concerning
Roma communities provoked us to put emphasis on new media art as an
available means for self-presentation and self-reflection.

We invite artists and researchers to submit proposals that address
these issues in a way that will allow further collaborative
development, both of content and media-wise. The selected contributors
will be invited to present and discuss their proposals at a working
meeting to take place in Belgrade (April 2010) where we will discuss
the possibilities of eventual further productions of individual works
or collaborative projects. The conditions for production will be
agreed for the most promising concepts to be realised in 2010 and
presented at the 2nd Roma Pavilion in Venice (2011).

The project 2nd Roma Pavilion - Call the Witness is organised by the
Roma Media Base – A Skopje based organisation for archiving, producing
and presenting contemporary and new media art by Roma artists and
communities, and the Biro for Culture and Communication from Belgrade.
The project is supported by the Open Society Institute and other
organisations and sponsors.

The First Roma Pavilion took place in 2007 as a collateral exhibition
at the 52nd Venice Biennale and was initiated by the Open Society
Institute.

HOW TO APPLY?

1. Call for artists/researchers

and draft (up to 500 words) that will draw on your interests and the
main issues addressed in this project

2. Call the Witness Media Archive

We invite Roma cultural centers, archives, festivals and other
organisations and producers to submit existing new media productions
(photo archives, video research projects, etc.) to the Call the
Witness Media Archive that will be presented at the 2nd Roma Pavilion
in Venice.

At this stage please submit only a description of the media
production(s) or the content of your archive, the address of your
organisation and samples (texts, images jpgs, links to video excerpts,
existing online archives, etc.)

Friends of the Earth International 5th Annual Photo Competitionjel

Friends of the Earth International is the world's largest grassroots
environmental network, uniting 77 diverse national member groups and
some 5,000 local activist groups on every continent. With more than 2
million members and supporters around the world, we campaign on
today's most urgent environmental and social issues. We challenge the
current model of economic and corporate globalization, and promote
solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and
socially just societies.

The best shots will be featured in materials produced by these
organizations and social movements, including a 2011 calendar and an
international photo exhibition.

The judges will choose a total of 12 winning photographs (6 from each

The ECBC is a member of the Competence Network 'Institutions and

The position is available from spring 2010 for an initial duration of

humanities or the social science with interest in interdisciplinary

international competition is promoted by the National Association of
Italian Footwear Manufacturers, the reference point for worldwide
footwear manufacturers. Anci once again turns to creative artists,
invited to create artwork conceived with the aid of digital
technology. Footwear, a 3D fashion accessory by definition, is a
technological sculpture, which hides the secrets that make it come
true. So let us give a green light to Artists and their open vision
and interpretation of this object, who will refer to this little but
big universe. Works can be illustrations, traditional sculptures, or
CG3D. The jury will select 20 works that will be printed and inserted
in a breathtaking 3-D stereoscopic video. They will be showed to
visitors and international press during next Micam ShoEvent (Milano,
March 2nd to 5th, 2010). During the event the winner will be announced
and awarded with a prize money.

Through the Hungarian Scholarship Board Office, the Hungarian Minister
of Education and Culture offers scholarships for foreign students and
professors of higher education institutions as well as research
fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in
Hungarian institutions of higher education or research. Scholarships
can be applied for under two systems:

BILATERAL AGREEMENTS

The Office of the Hungarian Scholarship Board (hereinafter HSB)
welcomes applications by citizens of countries (and territories) that
have a valid/effective educational co-operation programme with
Hungary, or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Government
or the Ministry of Education and Culture of Hungary and the relevant
ministry of the given country (or territory). Assessment and
shortlisting of applications is conducted by the relevant home country
(or territory) scholarship authority or Ministry of Education, as well
as dissemination of all information regarding the application
procedure and deadlines. The list of countries (or territories) and
contact information on the partner scholarship offices can be found on
our webpage (http://www.scholarship.hu/static/angol/partners/).

Although the Hungarian Scholarship Board accepts applications from
these countries (or territories) submitted directly to its Office,
please note that the applications evaluated and forwarded by the home
country (or territory) authorities always take precedence.

Citizens of Austria can also apply for Hungarian scholarships through
the Stiftung Aktion Österreich-Ungarn (www.omaa.elte.hu).

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES

Applicants can apply for all scholarship types in the "scholarship
pool" system. The scholarships offered in the bilateral agreements
announced by the foreign partners are also categorized according to
these scholarship types. In some cases the co-operation
programme/bilateral agreement does not contain all the scholarships
listed under the pool programme, hence they may not figure among the
scholarships announced by the partner office. For citizens of
countries that have a bilateral agreement and a partner scholarship
office it is recommended to submit their applications directly to HSB,
in the pool system, in case the bilateral agreement does not allow for
a specific type of scholarship listed in the pool programme.

Applicants are exempt who gained admission to a tuition-free program
at an institution of higher education (state-financed university,
full-time program), where the working language is different from
Hungarian.

The following scholarships are available in the Academic Year 2010/2011:

A - semester / partial studies (3-10 months)
Can be applied for by: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc)
students, especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and
Literature, as well as graduating students working on their theses,
and students enrolled in "single track" university programmes (such as
General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Veterinary Studies,
Architecture and Jurisprudence). Before application, students are
required to have completed minimum two semesters at their home
institutions. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an
application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on
another occasion during his/her MA studies.

B - postgraduate studies, research (3-21 days or 1-10 months)
Can be applied for by: applicants holding a Master's degree or an
equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do
research for their dissertation, yet wish to stay in Hungary for less
than 12 months. (However, PhD students cannot acquire credits at their
host universities.)

C/1 - full PhD programme (36 months)
Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply, the scholarship is
conditional upon successful entrance exam / admission to the
respective doctoral school.

C/2 - partial PhD studies (12 months)
Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited
institution of higher education in his/her home country or in a
foreign country (but not in Hungary).

D - postdoctoral studies / research (1-10 months)
Applicants must have a PhD or an equivalent degree.

E - research stay (3-21 days or 1-10 months)
For associate or higher ranking professors or for researchers holding
minimum a PhD or an equivalent degree.

F - summer courses in the summer of 2009 (1-4 weeks)
Courses must be chosen only from the list of Summer Courses 2010
published on the HSB website.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

These scholarships allow for study or research in any field of arts
and sciences during the granted period at an accredited Hungarian
higher education or research institution to be determined in advance.
Semester, partial, postgraduate studies and doctoral programmes must
be carried out in state-financed institutions where no tuition fee is
required. For Type A scholarship, an applicant may submit an
application only on one occasion during his/her BA studies, and on
another occasion during his/her MA studies.
Type A (semester /partial studies) and type C1/C2 (full PhD and
partial PhD studies) scholarships may not be extended. Type B
(postgraduate studies), D (postdoctoral studies, research), and E
(research stay) scholarships may be extended exceptionally, only under
special circumstances, on one occasion. The scholarships are valid
only for studies and research purposes in Hungary. HSB scholarships
can only be used for conducting studies or research in Hungary, which
means that scholarship-holders must stay in Hungary during the whole
period of their studies or research.

The scholarships are awarded for the summer of 2010, or the academic
year of 2010-2011, and these latter ones must be finished by 30 June
2011 at the latest.

CASES OF NON-ELIGIBILITY

1. Foreign citizens with a residence permit or in the course of
applying for a residence permit in Hungary cannot apply.
2. Men and women, who have an employment contract or employment
relationship as defined by the law in Hungary cannot apply.
3. Students applying for part-time or correspondence study
programmes cannot apply.
4. Students applying for non state-financed universities cannot apply.
5. Students admitted to tuition fee-paying institutions of higher
education cannot apply.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Heidelberg in

In our research group, there are several projects focused on the
development of biologically active functional polymer surfaces and
materials, "smart" switchable polymer surfaces, and gradient surfaces
that we use for fundamental investigations of biological interfaces,
for studying cell- and bacteria-surface interactions and for studying
biofouling.

The motivation behind our research is: to learn how cells and bacteria
interact with surfaces; to develop biocompatible, biomimetic and
"smart" materials that can improve performance of existing biomedical
or cell culture devices.

Our research is very interdisciplinary and we closely collaborate with
biologists and physicists from the KIT and University of Heidelberg.

Artist-in-Residence Program

All artists working in photography and related media are eligible to
apply to Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program

Each year Light Work invites 12-15 artists to participate in its
residency program, including one artist co-sponsored by Autograph ABP.
Artists selected for the residency program are invited to live in
Syracuse for one month. They receive a $4,000 stipend, a $500 digital
printing credit, an apartment to stay in, a private digital studio, a
private darkroom, and 24-hour access to our facility.

Our color-managed digital imaging lab features Macintosh workstations
equipped with flatbed and film scanners. Output options include Epson
9900, 9800, and 4880 printers that can render continuous gray-scale
and color prints onto a broad variety of materials. Artists use Adobe
Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Macromedia Director Studio,
Flash, Dreamweaver, Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio
Pro software packages, iLife, and more programs. In addition, our
traditional lab facility can accommodate just about any black and
white process from alternative processes to mural printing.

Participants in the residency program are expected to use their month
to pursue their own projects: photographing in the area, printing for
a specific project or book, and so on. Artists are not obligated to
teach at our facility, though we hope that the artists are friendly
and accessible to local artists. Work produced by the
Artists-in-Residence will also be published in Light Work's
publication Contact Sheet.

All artists working in photography and related media are eligible to
apply to Light Work's Artist-in-Residence program. There is no
application form or deadline. Artists should submit the following:

* letter of intent, describing plans for residency
* current resume, including exhibition record
* artist statement
* around twenty images (slides, proof prints, or disk) of your most
recent work or current project, plus any supporting material you feel
would be appropriate in evaluating your application
* postage for the return of materials, or note to discard material
after review process (international artists can include credit card
information for return postage)

If you are submitting individual image files, please size the images
at 2MB or less per image. Images can be sent as Tiff or JPEG files.
PDF or Powerpoint presentations are equally acceptable and may exceed
the 2MB file size. If possible please also send a printout of
thumbnails or one or two proof prints. Please do not send books or
brochures unless you are providing adequate return postage.

While we do not want to discourage anyone from applying, we are
primarily interested in artists who are seriously involved with the
medium of photography, and who clearly understand their intentions as
an artist.

is the swirling of a current in the meteorological and in the
metaphorical sense. Turbulences are threatening and chance, upswing or
crash. How can one find expression for these invisible strengh of the
wind? We look forward to multiform ideas, which dedicate themselves to
the interpretation of the topic. Artistic answers in the form of wind
objects, installations, performances and land art in the widest sense
are demanded. Variety and transverse thinking from all sections of the
art are welcome.

The organizers will search for realization also for unusual
contributions together with the artists. A jury of art historians,
artists and persons of the public life will select the exhibits.
Another Jury will award the prize winner(s).

The art price is endowed with 2,500 euros.

Basic technical conditions
· An application with up to 3 works/ artist group is possible.

as far as they are assimilable into the Open-Air-conception

with (seams with metal holes, hooks, rings poles or stands or

object is heavier and has been okayed you must supply a suitable
installation for hanging it up or displaying it.
· Large two and three dimensional exhibits are welcome. Please remind

· Because we would like great variety and artistic freedom the
conditions for entry have been deliberately kept very open. We will do
everything possible to find ways of presenting ‚difficult cases'.

Legal Conditions · Because the objects are being presented in the open
air no responsibility or insurance can be taken. The presenting artist
bears the risk. In the case of loss, theft or destruction the
organiser is not to be held financially responsible.
· There is no insurance cover.
· The artist has to ensure that his exhibit will not endanger the
public. He has also to ensure safety for children.
· After the end of the exhibition (from 2nd of September,2010) the
objects will be returned to the artists personally as arranged or may
be sent back at the artist's cost. For foreign artist prepaid dispatch
forms are required.
· If exhibits have not been collected by 15th of October, 2010, they
become the property of the organisers.
· The entering artist is responsible for the manufacturing and transport costs.
· The organiser is responsible for advertising, hanging up and

THE PROJECT
Each summer Beam commissions a Project Master to design a unique
large-scale collaborative endeavor that campers produce and enjoy. The
Project can range from the conceptual to the structural. We are
looking for big ideas that will challenge and excite our campers and
staff. Our Project Management Team will work with the Master to
"translate" the Master's project blueprint into the camp context.

THE CAMP
Beam Camp (http://www.beamcamp.com) is a 4-week summer program for
boys and girls aged 7-17 in Strafford, New Hampshire. Beam Campers
cultivate hands-on skills while exploring innovative thinking, design
and the creative process. They transform ideas into artifacts and
personal achievement into community success.Teams of campers work on
different aspects of the Project each morning. In the afternoons, they
participate in Domains,unique, in-depth, hands-on explorations in the
arts, sciences, athletic or cultural fields.

We generally spend $10,000 on Project-specific materials including any

WHAT ARE THE MASTER'S TIME REQUIREMENTS?
Master will consult with Camp Directors in developing the camp
curriculum around the Project. We ask that the Master be available for

Description
The overall goal of the lab is to determine the innate mechanisms
which drive pathogenic autoimmunity.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex chronic autoimmune
disease that is classically associated with the production of
pathogenic autoantibodies to a wide spectrum of nuclear antigens. This
leads to an immune complex deposition of self-reactive material
culminating with cellular recruitment, cytokine production and overall
inflammation within organs such as the kidney. Our recent and ongoing
investigations into the functional variations of several SLE
susceptibility loci, including Yaa and Sle3, have demonstrated that
these disease alleles enhance responses to TLR ligands and mediate
myeloid cell hyperactivity.

Each project will determine the mechanism by which TLR7 and TLR9
augment autoimmunity. There will be additional opportunities for
motivated postdocs to work "hands on" with collaborators in the US.

This residence offers them an opportunity to carry on with their current research, develop their thoughts on some topic in connection with the collection, or experiment with new forms of writing.

PURPOSE OF RESIDENCE
The Art critic will be meeting the players in the Saarlorlux regions (institutions, artists, association) as listed quite independently by Frac Lorraine.
He will lead the thinking process behind the Frac Lorraine collection and notably with regard to the direction towards acquisitions policy.
This reflection may be subjected to restitution in the form of a text or article (to be defined).

The Art critic will also give thought to the drafting of a possible scenario for an exhibition based on the Frac Lorraine collection.
Frac Lorraine shall make available to the Art critic the assistance of Frac personnel involved in the project and the equipment at their disposal (office, computer, telephone, car…), subject to availability.

The Art critic may be put in touch with various partner institutions or schools of Art / Architecture in the SaarLorLux region, in certain cases for the purpose of holding meetings on the current situation of the Austrian art scene and/or for the needs of his own personal research. Under no circumstances may the organisation of such meetings interfere with the period of residence.

even if having their origin in a specific space of time and religion,
the early Christian era, they still have a universal character. LUST,
GLUTTONY, GREED, SLOTH, WRATH, ENVY and PRIDE. 7 Sins Contest is an
international competition that will take place through the website
aimed at artists of all disciplines (graffiti, painting, graphic
design, photography, etc..) with the main objective of capturing these
old clichés in a visual way and therefore exposing the mentality

Scholarship is awarded to top students whose profiles match the

Eligibility requirements

Students from outside of the European Union who have been offered a
place to study at undergraduate or Masters level are eligible.

This scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic
credentials and whose profile matches that of their chosen course.
Students' financial situations are also taken into account when

Undergraduate programme: Amount and length of the scholarship

The Emile Boutmy programme can take several different forms for
students on the undergraduate programme. The length of the scholarship

the undergraduate programme, in addition to a grant to cover part of

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral research position, funded by
the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) Global
Research Partnership (GRP), to work with Professor Alain Goriely at
the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied
Mathematics (OCCAM). This position is available from 1 March 2010.

OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST
GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, is
allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the
ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of
complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of
four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians
working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied
Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical
Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic
relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for
problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and
beyond. Over the first five years the Centre will employ 40 new staff
and students.

Growth processes are found in many physical and biological systems
such as planetary accretion, morphogenesis, and tumour progression.
The project will involve developing mathematical tools for the
analysis of growth processes within the framework of continuum
mechanics. In particular, the project will focus on accretive growth
(the deposition and accretion of new materials on existing surfaces).
Accretive growth has applications to physical, biological, and
industrial problems, such as planet genesis from dust clouds,
secondary growth in trees, glacier and snow buildup, horn and seashell
expansion, bone growth, wound healing, coil winding, and surface
hardening.

The main goal is to formulate a general theory of accretive growth
based on nonlinear elasticity and thermodynamics, and differential
geometry. The modelling of specific systems will involve the
derivation of coupled nonlinear continuum equations, and the solution
of these equations using analytical and numerical techniques.

Applicants should have a PhD (awarded or submitted at the time of
taking up the position) in mathematics or related discipline, together
with expertise in applied mathematics and continuum mechanics.
Experience with modelling of experimental systems and knowledge of
differential geometry is desirable.

European Prize for Urban Public Space

WHY PUBLIC SPACE?
Given the reductionism and oversimplification of some of the
large-scale urban projects implemented in Europe in recent years, and
the risks of homogenisation and impoverishment of the urban landscape,
we believe that promoting public space and making known its political
and plural character and the diversity of functions it can embrace, is
an ideal way of stimulating urban projects that aim to reinvent and
enhance the structural role that this space has always played in
European cities.

The European Prize for Urban Public Space is a biennial competition
that aims to highlight the importance of public space as a catalyst of
urban life, and to recognise and foster investment by public
administrations in its creation, conservation and improvement, while
also understanding the state of public space as a clear indicator of
the civic and collective health of our cities.

CALL FOR ENTRIES
The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Cité de
l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris), The Architecture Foundation
(London), the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut (Rotterdam), the
Architekturzentrum Wien (Vienna) and the Museum of Finnish
Architecture (Helsinki) have announced the SIxth European Prize for
Urban Public Space, which is to be awarded on 11 June 2010 in
Barcelona. The first European Prize for Urban Public Space was offered
in 2000 and since then it has been awarded on a two-yearly basis with
the aim of recognising and promoting activities for the recovery and
improvement of public space in European cities. The sixth award of the
Prize is now announced in keeping with the aim of highlighting and
making known projects that have been completed in Europe between 2008
and 2009.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION
In order to enter for the European Prize for Urban Public Space, the
works must be presented for the award by the institutions that are
responsible for the intervention, or by its authors. The Prize covers
the geographic region of the Council of Europe (http:www.coe.int/).If
it is desired to present interventions related with the creation of
new urban spaces, it must be borne in mind that, apart from general
considerations about the effect as a whole, the results achieved
within these public spaces and their impact on community life will be
the ones that are specifically evaluated.
Since some urban interventions involve long periods of work before
their completion, projects that have not been fully completed in 2008
or 2009 may also present for the Prize if enough phases have been
finished so as to enable assessment of the urban repercussions of the
intervention as a whole. In order to present for the Prize, the
required documentation as specified in these rules must be submitted
before the established deadline.

Michaela Hargitay (A), Eszter Gál (H) and Zsóka Nej/Workshop Foundation (H) invite you to apply for a residency in the frame of Research into the Unknown, a program that aims at encouraging artists to research on improvisation as an artistic tool, as a means of creation in contemporary dance.

One Hungarian and one foreign choreographer/creative dancer participate in the residency programme each semester and they choose partners, artists from other artforms, with whom they venture into the Unknown in an experimental fashion with the help of improvisation.

The programme is made up of three consecutive steps, in each step the production period is followed by a presentation. The first demonstration offers a possibility to present a rough work-out of the artistic concept in a studio, with the integration of the audience as an active part of the performance. The second step is a work-in-progress show in a (theatre) studio with minimal lights and technical help, with audience feedback-round at the end. The closing evening of the residency programme at the end of the third step is a theatre performance where participating pairs present the results of their research work.

The MIT Visual Arts Program / Program in Art, Culture and Technology
seeks committed, inquisitive and creative students for the 2010-2011
academic year. This selective two-year program grants successful
participants a Master of Science in Visual Studies (SMVisS) degree.
The program focuses on researched-based artistic practice, advanced
visual studies and experimentation, and offers opportunities for
transdisciplinary relationships with other programs and labs at MIT.

The Program
The MIT Visual Arts Programâ€"which will be renamed the "Program in
Art, Culture and Technology (ACT)" in Spring 2010â€"operates as a
critical production- and education-based laboratory focusing on
artistic research, advanced visual studies, and transdisciplinary
collaboration within the context of MIT's technological community.
The program explores the role of art, culture, and technology in
society and considers artistic practice to be knowledge production.
The emphasis is on how cultural and artistic practices critically
engage science and technology and envision their transformation. The
curriculum includes courses in the "Production of Space,"
"Interrogative Design," "Networked Cultures," and "Contemporary
Curatorial Practice" among others. Collaborative and individual
investigations include performance, sound and video, photography,
experimental media addressing context and display, and the interplay
of old and new genres that intersect with technology. The exchange
and collaboration with ACT faculty and research fellows is essential
to the program, and is supplemented by encounters with visiting
artists and critics, conferences, workshops, and screenings. The
program hosts a weekly lecture series of artists, urbanists, and
scholars from a broad range of disciplines from the campus, the
region and from around the world. The series is part of the vibrant
exchange of ideas that is a hallmark of the program and the campus.
The Faculty
Instructors are world-renowned with active, international careers and
a strong interest in transdisciplinary debate, research, and modes of
production. Program Director and Associate Professor Ute Meta Bauer
directed SITAC VI 2008 in Mexico City and was Artistic Director of
the 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art. Professor Krzysztof
Wodiczko is the Director of The Interrogative Design Group at MIT and
represented his native Poland at the Venice Biennale in 2009 and
currently is exhibiting at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art.
Professor Joan Jonas is a video and performance pioneer and recent
recipient of the Guggenheim Lifetime Achievement Award for
extraordinary contributions to contemporary art. Associate Professor
Gediminas Urbonas, along with Nomeda Urbonas, was awarded Honorable
Mention for the Lithuanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007.
Visiting Professor Antoni Muntadas was the recipient of the 2009
VelÃ¡zquez Prize from the Spanish Culture Ministry. Lecturers Andrea
Frank (Photography), Amber Frid-Jimenez (Participatory Media), Joe
Gibbons (Video), Wendy Jacob (Autism Studio), and Oliver Lutz
(Multi-Media) are prominent practitioners in their fields.

Under the title 'Accelerated Living', the Impakt Festival 2009 focuses on changing notions of time. In the past decades, revolutionary developments in information and communication technology and the spread of globalisation have led to a new temporal dynamic emphasizing speed and connectivity. The tyranny of clock time has given way to a complex web of varying rhythms and cycles, which stimulate the temporal imagination as never before. The resulting search after a new engagement with time will take centre stage at this five-day festival in a series of screenings, talks, performances, and an exhibition.

Below, please find just a few highlights from the upcoming programme:

An absolute must is the Hooliganship workshop of 16 and 17 October. Participants can go to work themselves and process their own visual ideas about the current visual culture into a collective video mix.

In addition, Impakt Invites shows works from OK.Video – Jakarta International Video Festival, Annika Larsson and Jonas Staal & Vincent van Gerven Oei.

Within the framework of Impakt Online, Online artists such as Richard Rogers and Theo Deutinger give presentations about the projects they developed for The Slow Web and It's About Time. With these projects, they reflect on the changing notions of time as brought about by the Internet.

A special feature of the Impakt Festival 2009 is the one-day conference organised in collaboration with Utrecht University. A group of international thinkers from a wide variety of disciplines such as music theory, sociology, visual arts and computer game culture come together to discuss the ways in which people deal with experiences of space, speed and time, both online and offline.

The musical programme explores the boundaries of sound experience. From the dubstep Speed Tribes night, to an evening of Ecstatic Mutations featuring the likes of Thomas Brinkmann and Oren Ambarchi. A special part of this year's festival is the performance of the musical piece Naldjorak I, II and III by Eliane Radigue, exploring the phenomenological existence of sound. For this exploration, she has been experimenting with a wide range of instruments ever since the 1950s, and nowadays limits herself to acoustic instruments only. For Naldjorak I, II and III, Eliane Radigue works with cello player Charles Curtis and Carole Robinson and Bruno Martinez on wind instruments.

The ITU PhD programme trains researchers to carry out independent research at the highest International level. Researchers are enrolled for either 3 or 4 years in a PhD programme, and are ensured that all necessary activities are properly financed.

All interested are welcome to apply. The call for entry is open to short meter (low-fi, amateur, student work), short video (experimental video, video art) and animation. The Presidential Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition award, the recipients of which represent some of the most exemplary student leaders on Saint Louis University's campus. Each Presidential Scholar is also provided with University funding of up to $1,200 in support of an Investigative Learning Experience (ILEX), which may take the form of a research venture, service project, internship or other extracurricular endeavor of choice.

Presidential Scholarship Eligibility

Students who meet the following minimum requirements are invited to fill out a separate application for Presidential Scholarship candidacy:

Cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher, weighted or unweighted, as reported on the students high school transcript at the close of junior year Official test score of at least 30 on the ACT or 1320 (math and critical reading) on the SAT Only those students who meet these requirements will be considered eligible for candidacy. These criteria are used only for determining eligibility and do not guarantee that the student will be selected either for further competition or as a Presidential Scholarship recipient.

Based on their scholarship applications, a select group of students will be invited to Saint Louis University's campus in January or February 2010 to interview and compete for the Presidential
Scholarship.

Qualifying Test Scores
Test scores from either the ACT or the SAT may serve as qualifiers for Presidential Scholarship candidacy. However, scores from December 2009 test dates are the last that can be used to determine eligibility.

Students who anticipate achieving a qualifying test score during a December test datemust still submit a completed Presidential Scholarship Application by December 1, 2009. Presidential Scholarship applicants who adhere to this deadline and achieve a qualifying test score in the month of December will still be given consideration for Presidential Scholarship candidacy.

Kennedy Scholarships tenable in 2010 – 2011 are offered by the Trustees of the Kennedy Memorial Trust. About six to eight Scholarships are awarded, which cover tuition and health service fees, the cost of travel to and from the USA and provide an allowance of at least $22,000 for the year plus an additional travel grant.

Applicants must be British citizens at the time of application, who are also ordinarily resident in the UK, who have spent at least two of the last five years studying at a university in the United Kingdom and who will have graduated before taking up their Scholarship.

Artists' Residencies at Aberystwyth Arts Centre are supported by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation are intended to give artists "time" to develop their work. Applications are now invited for the new Artists' Residency Programme. Successful artists will be based for a period of either 3 or 6 months at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University, in newly built studios designed by the award winning Thomas Heatherwick. The residencies are open to UK visual artists in all disciplines including applied arts. The successful artists will receive studio space of c. 35 square metres, accommodation, and living expenses for the duration of their residency. The residency will be an opportunity for the artist to step away from the everyday constraints of life and experience time in which to develop individual artistic practice, and to exchange ideas in a creative atmosphere with people from other disciplines.

The selected artists will devote most of their time to pursuing their work, but the following will, by discussion with individual artists, be a part of the experience:

An informal public talk by the artist about their practice Social meetings with other artists and arranged visits to other arts venues in Wales Open studio morning once per month by arrangement with the artist Open Studio exhibition of work at the end of the residency.

The possibility of the work being exhibited for a longer period in one of the Arts Centre Galleries will be discussed during the residency; as will the potential for any outreach/educational work should the artist wish it.

Up to three artists will be offered residencies at any one time. Other Units in the complex will be in use by a variety of creative businesses.

A residency will cover the following costs for the agreed period: cost of the Studio, including heating, lighting etc; accommodation arranged locally. A fixed sum for living expenses and materials will be awarded. Travel to and from Aberystwyth is borne by the artist.

The amounts currently awarded are: £100 per week living expenses to include travel during the residency period; £25 per week materials allowance.

The studios have basic furniture only. Facilities within the Arts Centre will be available by negotiation, eg. digilab equipment, darkroom, ceramics studio etc.

Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the artistic or professional excellence of the applicant's work; and the extent to which a residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre will contribute to the artist's development and be consistent with the applicant's creative goals, and professional development.

The next selection will be in Autumn 2009.

RobotDoc (Robotics for Development of Cognition) is a multi-national doctoral training network for the interdisciplinary training on developmental cognitive robotics. The PhD students will develop advanced expertise of domain-specific cognitive robotics research skills and of complementary transferrable skills for careers in academia and industry. They will acquire hands-on experience through experiments with the open-source humanoid robot iCub, complemented by other existing robots available in the network's laboratories.

The two PhD studentships at the University of Plymouth will be in the following topics: (1) The emergence of symbol composition capabilities, and (2) The grounding of abstract categories.

A new 3-years PhD position is immediately available at the MoS Modeling and Simulation Center, University of Örebro, Sweden under the supervision of Dr. Franziska Kluegl.

The major part of the PhD studies can be dedicated to research in the area of Learning for Model Design Support in Multi-Agent Simulation: Developing Multi-Agent Simulation Model is a challenging task that is often done in a suboptimal try and error procedure. Our idea is that it can be supported by learning and adaptive agents cooperating with a human modeler. There are various interesting starting points for the development and application of learning agent architectures and mechanisms from Artificial Intelligence such as reinforcement learning, classification learning or evolutionary strategies. Simulated agents shall use such techniques for discovering non-valid situations, selecting interaction partners, revising decision rules, etc. The human modeler evaluates the suggestions of the learning agents or supports them by pointing to particular problematic or interesting situations. Such an interplay between learning agents and human modeler may result in an efficient model development process and finally to a valid Multi-Agent Simulation model. Ideas can be tested in interdiscilinary simulation projects for example in the area of pedestrian simulation.

In addition to interest in the topic, a strong theoretical background and solid programming skills, applicants should have the equivalent of a Masters degree in an appropriate field (for example: Intelligent Systems and Robotics, Computer Science, Physics or Applied Mathematics). It is not necessary to be familiar with the Swedish language but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University seeks to fill a professional scientific position for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder, Colorado (office will be in Boulder).

Background:
The Advanced Computing Section (ACS) of the Earth System Research Laboratory's (ESRL's) Global Systems Division (GSD) provides parallel programming support of NOAA earth system models being run on NOAA's supercomputers. The ACS works with modelers within the laboratory to assist in code development, debugging, porting and performance tuning of new and existing parallel codes. Some codes utilize the Message Passing Interface (MPI), while other codes utilize the Scalable Modeling System (SMS) developed by the ACS. The Scalable Modeling
System (SMS) is high-level software designed to assist modelers and programmers in developing and maintaining their codes in a parallel computing environment.

Traditionally, ACS has worked primarily with atmospheric codes, but recently, modeling research at GSD has shifted toward earth system models where an atmospheric code is but one component of a more complex coupled system. Modeling components in an earth system model could include ocean, land surface, atmospheric chemistry, and inter-component couplers. The NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) is a high level framework designed to support coupling of model components via a software infrastructure and metadata standards. NEMS relies on the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF). ESMF is software being developed by NOAA and other agencies to provide a standard way to couple modeling components together. NEMS is being adopted by NOAA operational centers and will be required for all models run operationally at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).

Responsibilities:
As part of the ACS, this position will be converting models and model components into the NEMS framework for use on NOAA's developmental and operational super-computers. Initially, the individual will be responsible for two primary tasks using ESMF and NEMS: (1) coupling the Flow Following Finite-volume Icosahedral Model (FIM) with a icosahedral variant of the HYCOM Ocean Model; and (2) coupling the Non-hydrostatic Icosahedral Model (NIM) with an alternate physics package. The FIM and NIM models, written in Fortran, were developed at ESRL and rely on the Scalable Modeling System (SMS) to run on distributed memory parallel computers. SMS is directive-based parallelization software that was also developed at ESRL and relies on the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library.

The candidate will initially work with another senior software engineer to become familiar with the ESMF and NEMS, but may eventually become a focal point for model coupling activities, responsible for development, coupling, collaborating with other agencies, and supporting scientific inquiries and use by scientists and software engineers in ESRL and other NOAA laboratories.

Qualifications:
Required qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related Physical Science, with 5-10 years experience in Fortran programming, parallel programming, structured coding, and skill in debugging parallel codes. The candidate must have worked extensively in Linux or Unix operating systems and have some experience developing shell scripts and working with software management systems such as Subversion. An ability to effectively communicate technical concepts via oral presentations or written reports is also required.

Knowledge of and experience with NEMS and/or ESMF are highly desirable. The candidate will be required to interact extensively with the ESMF and NEMS teams in order to be effective. Since NIM and FIM were written using the MPI-based SMS, experience with SMS and/or MPI is also highly desirable. Additional useful qualifications include familiarity with scientific models and data formats, and experience with the Climate and Forecasting (CF) metadata standards.

The student initiatives with the most powerful and provocative solutions will be given financial awards to help fund the implementation of their project within the community. A total of $15,000 will be awarded to the concept or concepts that have the demonstrated ability to ignite change within their local community based on the following broad parameters:

Addresses a pressing social need within a community
Can be implemented within that community
Delivers positive results that can be measured

Awards will be given to fund the material costs of executing the project. Design Ignites Change believes that designers should be compensated for their time when executing socially minded projects. As such, up to 10% of your total requested award amount may be earmarked as an honorarium to cover your time. Monies will be disbursed in one of two ways:

Paid directly to the vendors contracted to execute the project
Paid to the school or organization who will oversee the execution of the project

Worldstudio will determine the best way to distribute the award money on a case-by-case basis.

The application deadline is December 31, 2009. A complete case study must also be posted on the Design Ignites Change website by December 31, 2009.

Hosted by the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the biennial Icograda World Design Congress will be held in Beijing, China for the first time.

From 24-30 October 2009, some 100 speakers and thousands of delegates from around the globe will gather in a cross-disciplinary Congress, with communication as its central theme, offering five days of exchange and dialogue within the international design community.

In the face of a worldwide economic downturn, we now have a chance to look at the energy of design, to share design experiences, and to restore our confidence in overcoming the challenges of this difficult period.

The theme of this year's Congress is Xin.

The Best ICT4EE Project Award - energy efficiency competition

The European Commission's DG INFSO has launched a competition in the field of ICT for energy efficiency - "The Best ICT4EE Project Award". The winner will be selected by a combination of both internet voting and an expert jury.

The aim of the competition is to promote innovation in ICT that will contribute to substantial and measurable improvements in energy efficiency, and that have the potential to provide visible and convincing showcases for investment by business, citizens or both.

The Best ICT4EE Project Award is open to all publicly funded research and technological development projects that involve one or more participants having research and/or business interests in each of the ICT and energy domains. The significant increase in the amount of digital video content (TV channels in particular), and the diversification of broadcast possibilities and storage devices, have recently given rise to the emergence of many new services and novel TV program consumption schemes. These new services are basically aimed at making TV content available to users without any constraint on location and/or time. They would allow users to directly find what they are looking for through powerful search engines and human-machine interfaces. Examples of such services are TV-on-demand, interactive TV, Network Personal Video Recorders, catch-up TV, start-over, WebTVs...

The objective of the workshop is twofold. First, it aims at highlighting the need for powerful and automatic audio and video content-based techniques in building novel TV services. The second objective is to bring in professionals and researchers, and to present the recent advances in the field. The workshop will also be open to research works on processing content collected from radio broadcasts. Important added-value services may be built on top of radio content.

The Postgraduate Programme in Curating (MAS/CAS) is a discursive platform designed to impart specialist knowledge of contemporary curating practices through practice-oriented projects. The Postgraduate Programme in Curating examines the key issues involved in contemporary exhibition making through taught modules, group activities, and practical project
work. Coursework explores different areas of knowledge, and involves the development and production of projects through lectures and workshops delivered by an international selection of artists, curators, theorists, architects and designers. The programme focuses less on the concept of the exhibition planner as an individual author, which has been a highly controversial topic since the 1990s, and more on cooperative, interdisciplinary working methods. The Postgraduate Programme in Curating offers two study opportunities. The Postgraduate Diploma (CAS) is a one-year, part-time course providing participants with a basic qualification in key areas of curatorial practice, namely research, design, organisation and communication, in addition to basic theoretical knowledge. The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) is a two-year, part-time programme leading to an advanced qualification. It provides participants with an indepth enquiry into the key areas of curatorial practice and relevant theory. Under the Research Program "Fiscal Federalism" (Heads: Prof. Albert Solé-Ollé & Prof. Núria Bosch-Roca) at the IEB, we are seeking applications for Four Doctoral Scholarships

The academic year starts on September 1, 2009. The scholarship is for a period of two years (Master`s period), plus two additional years (PhD period) for students who are accepted on the PhD program. The amount of each stipend is 1,000 euro/month, and tuition fees will be waived.

The successful candidates will be admitted to the Master`s program in Economics at the University of Barcelona. The Master`s program is recognized by the Ministry of Education and the PhD program has received an award of excellence by the Ministry of Science.

The Master`s program comprises core subjects during the first year (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics and Econometrics) and three optional subjects from a list. During the second year there are also optional subjects, apart from the Master`s thesis. We expect the candidate to be engaged in the field of "Public Economics" (optional subjects: Public Finance I: Public spending, Public Finance II: Taxation, Fiscal Federalism, Political Economics, and Health Economics). During the PhD period, the candidate will have two supervisors: one from the IEB, and another from the IEB research network. During the third and fourth years, candidates will be encouraged to undertake short periods as visiting researchers at institutions connected with the IEB.

Participation in the Research Program "Fiscal Federalism" provides a unique opportunity to help address issues such as the design of the financial system of sub-national governments, the evaluation of decentralization in the provision of public services, the analysis of inter-governmental tax competition, and the political economy of sub-national policy making. The IEB also provides an excellent research-oriented environment, as it regularly organizes research events such as seminars, workshops and summer schools. The candidate will be encouraged to actively participate in all these events.

Applications are invited for a three year PhD scholarship in the FEMTO-ST Institute (see www.femto-st.fr) at Besançon FRANCE.

This PhD project will form part of a wider project which aims to develop new mathematical tools and a general software dedicated to Arrays of Microsystems. Arrays of Microsystems have been developed and continue their expansion in a number of scientific and technical fields. The research of the project will focus on deriving general multi-scale multi-physical models able to cover large classes of such systems. The multi-scale mathematical methods will be rooted in recently developed techniques by our group or collaborators. Part of mathematical modeling will be done in collaboration with a Laboratory of Mathematics.

The scholarship is valued at about €1.000 net per month for three years. It will be available from 1 October 2009. Application to a room on the campus is possible for low rate. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a master's qualification in Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics or Mechanics, or comparable postgraduate work experience.

LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) are promoting a summer course on "Innovation in Digital Art and Culture" to be held this July at UOC's virtual classrooms. The course is part of a joint collaboration by the two institutions together with the Universidad de Oviedo with the goal of responding to theoretical and practical training needs of students, professionals and academics working in the sphere of audiovisual communication and contemporary digital culture. The course is directed by Pau Alsina, director of Artnodes and lecturer in Arts and Humanities at UOC, Rosina Gómez-Baeza, director of LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, and Aquilino A. Juan Fuente, director of the Universidad de Oviedo's Centre for Innovation.

The course Innovation in Digital Art and Culture is conceived to study the ongoing changes and transformations in contemporary art and cultural production under the influence of information and communication technologies, from an interdisciplinary context and in tune with the wider debates on an international scale in the fields of arts, humanities, communication and social sciences The programme is continued with the Feedforward International Symposium, scheduled for October 24th and 25th at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, open to all participants at this course.

Innovation in Digital Art and Culture is aimed at cultural producers (artists, critics, curators, journalists) and professionals related with art, social and cultural intervention. Its concerns range from critical and creative productions in and about the world of culture and art in several formats (artistic, journalistic, exhibitions, advertising) to educational and social practices carried out through culture (teachers, social educators, social workers, youth workers). It also targets the cultural industry and system (managers, directors, centres, politicians) and professionals from creative industries and cultural institutions in the wider sense of the term, involved in the processes of cultural management, production, planning, promotion and dissemination, and interested in studying the impact of ICTs on the industry.

Lecturers:

Tere Badía is an Art Historian and Master in Sociology from IN3. She is a freelance consultant to art networks and collectives on organisational processes. Steve Dietz is Art Director of 01SJ Biennial, a global festival of emerging art in San Jose, California. He is co-curating, together with Christiane Paul, the upcoming show Feedforward: Angel of History to be presented at Laboral, Asturias, Spain, in October 2009.

Jose Luis de Vicente is a cultural researcher focused on culture, technology and innovation. He has been deputy director of the ArtFutura festival (2001-2007), associated curator of digital art at the Sonar festival (2004-2007) and art director at OFFF (2005-2007).

Raquel Rennó is a doctor in Communication and Semiotics from Pontifícia Universidade Católica, Sao Paulo (2007).

School of Visual Arts (SVA), New York City, in partnership with Giraldi Media, announces the first annual Out of Hand International Festival, a showcase for innovative digital content created by students and intended for playback on mobile phones and other wireless or handheld devices. The festival invites aspiring artists, designers, filmmakers and creative thinkers worldwide to enter original work into competition using the online submission form by June 31, 2008. A public showing and awards presentation, awarding cash and other prizes to the top submissions, will take place in New York City in October 2009.
SVA-GIRALDI FESTIVAL LLC is happy to present the first annual Out of Hand International Festival. We are proud to showcase a platform for student filmmakers, artists, and technologists, allowing them to achieve worldwide recognition.

The Out of Hand International Festival is open to all students anywhere in the world. All genres of content will be accepted for review.

Each entry received for the Festival must be completed with an official submission form and be submitted through the Festival's web entry process.

Eligibility Requirements:

Festival is open to all students 17 years of age or older

All submissions must be received no later than June 30, 2009

Winning submissions will be announced in October, 2009

Submissions to the Out Of Hand Festival can be shot or created in any format (film, digital video, animation, flash, etc.)

The accepted file types are: JPG, GIF, PNG, DIVX, DAT, ASF, FLV, MPG, WMV, AVI and 3GP

File size must be less than 40MB

The maximum length of submission is 3 minutes

All dialog submissions must be in English or subtitled in English.

Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellowship in Germany

The 2009 Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellowship in Germany, a new initiative of the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), administered by InWEnt gGmbH in partnership with CDS International, Inc., is now accepting applications.

The program allows 15 fellows to attend a 5-day briefing on Germany's renewable energy policies and structures and to complete an internship of 3-6 months with a leading renewable energy company or organization. The program will run from September 5 through December 19, 2009, with the possibility to apply for a program through March 19, 2009. Fellows will receive a stipend in the amount of 3,300 Euro as well as support for travel expenditures to and in Germany.

As part of the Transatlantic Climate Bridge, the Fellowship seeks to further mutual understanding and transatlantic cooperation in climate and energy policies, to provide practical training for future leaders in the renewable energy and environmental fields, and to support renewable energy institutions in developing their human resources and transatlantic networks.

Eligibility criteria for the Fellowship are as follows:

* U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or current enrollment at a U.S. university or college
* Age 32 or younger at the application deadline
* Minimum of 3 years completed at a college or university, preferably with degree completed in a relevant field (see website for more information)
* Two years experience in renewable energy or a related field, preferably in a professional capacity

The creation of the European Research Area (ERA) as endorsed by the Lisbon Council in March 2000 has as its main goal to deeply root knowledge in society and free Europe's knowledge potential in all its dimensions, in people, infrastructures, organizations, funding, knowledge circulation and global cooperation. One of the strengths of ERA will be its ability to educate, attract and retain excellent women and men researchers from a diversity of backgrounds.

An inclusive, high-quality oriented and innovative scientific culture, reflecting the shared attitudes, values, goals, and the way people deal with each other in science and research is key in this context, a strong and coherent equal opportunities policy in research is a precondition as well as an integral part.

In all of this, science communication and the transfer of knowledge between science and society and the dialogue with society are vital. The conference aims at informing about core issues of scientific culture and communication and equipping participants with basic knowledge regarding their implementation in the running of networks. To this regard two training seminars on "Management of Networks" and "Access to Funding" will be offered.

The goal is to provide an overview on the variety of communication skills and tools in science and research, including the management of networks; to encourage women scientists to join the - so far male dominated - ranks of those active in the field; to actively communicate and promote their research results using their specific communication abilities and making full use of their potential in this respect.

A special visit to the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), the Museum, in Brussels where a particular path of the most fascinating scientific stories will be delivered, including an introduction on how modern museums communicate science to the public and the young generation and the possibility to hands-on scientific experiences, will provide a concrete example of science communication to the participants.

The conference will be a lively market place of networks, ideas, and partnerships. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work both through participating in topical seminars and through a poster exhibition highlighting research conducted at EU level.

Call for entries for World Wide Short Competition 2009.

The 10^th International Computer Graphics Conference is seeking entries for its View World Wide Short Competition. All 3D animations and VFX (visual effects) produced between 2006 and 2009 are eligible. The maximum time limit for these shorts is 30 minutes.

In order to widen the scope of talent for this competition, students are now eligible to enter their work in this contest.

The 2009 VIEW Award Categories are:

Best 3D short
This award is given to the best short movie created with 2D / 3D digital animation or live footage integrated with digital visual effects. Motion capture data is acceptable for sourcing animation. Entries will be judged on the following: technical excellence, originality, creativity, design and aesthetics. The time limit for entries is no more than 30 minutes.

Best 3D Design
This award is for the best entry that depicts an original 3D model for non-character subjects such as automotive, industrial design, architectural, or other common non-living objects. Any 3D modeling software may be used to generate models but must include all textures and shading information. Judging is based upon aesthetics, creativity, originality, and technical excellence.

Best Environment Design / Digital Matte Painting
This award category honors the best digital created digital virtual environment. The entries can consist exclusively of 3D graphics or a mix of digital 3D graphics and digital matte painting techniques. The digital environment can be of an interior or exterior setting and must be compete with surface appearance whether it is painted or textured. Entries are judged upon aesthetics, architectural value, originality, creativity, and technical excellence.

Best 3D Digital Character
This award goes to the best 3D digital character modeled for a video game or animated short film. Any 3D software maybe used for the 3D creation of the virtual character. Entries will be judged upon technical excellence, originality, aesthetics, and character personality.

Best Digital Visual Effects (VFX)
This award goes to the best digital visual effects sequence used in a computer generated animation or live-action digital effects short film. VFX may be created using any 3D graphics or compositing software.

As one of the largest photographic events existing today, The Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA), reach far beyond an awards programme for the still image. The SWPA is a convergence of festival events, focused photographic agendas, exhibitions, awards schemes, student programmes and an industry-led gala evening ceremony which marks the pinnacle of the week-long event in April 2009.

The Sony World Photography Awards Gala and central exhibitions that support the awards' nominees and honourees, occurs once a year in the prestigious Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France. The evening welcomes some of the most influential names in the photography industry, from press and media to gallerists, publishers, agents, critics, aficionados and the renowned artists themselves.

From fine art to applied photography in fashion, advertising and sport to humanistic and documentary photography of people, social, cultural and current affairs to the environmental image of landscape, wildlife and ecology, there are few subjects or genres left undiscovered. The celebration of the still image - its roots, conception, adaptation and continuous evolution - is a constant parallel, unifying all categories of the Sony World Photography Awards.

This impressive union of distinct photographic genres has spurred many of the industry's elite to actively support the SWPA. A very select group of these heavyweights have been invited to form the World Photographic Academy. To date, close to 100 members from the photographic community belong to this academy, from leading international agencies, guilds, galleries, publishing houses, foundations, press and of course renowned photographers themselves, such as Elliott Erwitt, Tom Stoddart, Susan Meiselas, Stuart Franklin, Mary-Ellen Mark and many more.

Professional Competition

The Sony World Photography Awards are entirely international, welcoming professional photographers from across the globe to submit their photographs into a highly competitive awards programme.

As an entering professional photographer, you will be judged by the World Photographic Academy in the hopes of being recognized by leading industry figures and taking the stage in Cannes to receive one of the 12 prestigious category awards and, the most coveted prize, L'iris d'Or, given to The Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year, with the recipient taking, amongst other things, prize money of $25,000.

Submitting your images: There are 12 categories in the professional programme, spread across 3 main photographic genres; to view the categories please click on the link to the left. Each photographer may submit up to a total of 10 images into a single professional category. Professionals will be judged on a body of images representing a photographic series or story. Professional photographers may enter bodies of work in more than one category.

The Judging Process: Your images will go through critical rounds of selections by the official 2010 Judging Committee, comprising selected World Photographic Academy members.

A shortlist of 7 photographers in each of the 12 categories will be selected and announced in February 2010.

Of the 7 short-listed photographers in each category, three finalists will then be selected and named as either the first, second or third place winners of each category given. The announcement of the 36 total winners will be made in March 2010.

For the final stage of judging, one single photographer will be chosen by the Honorary Judging Committee from the 12 First Place category winners. This photographer will be announced and awarded in Cannes as the recipient of the 2010 L'iris d'or.

The awards: All 36 Category finalists, will be showcased as part of the official 2010 Finalists exhibitions in Cannes, published in the winner's book and announced to the worldwide press as Sony World Photography Awards Category Finalists. These finalists will also be part of an annual SWPA Global Tour, have the opportunity to be represented and promoted by the World Photography Gallery, showcased on the SWPA website for all of 2010 and much more.

The first place winner of each category will be flown out to Cannes, receive 2 nights accommodation in a luxury hotel on the famous Croisette and receive VIP tickets to attend the evening gala awards ceremony, taking place on the 15th of April, 2010. PhD scholarships in Sociology - The scholarships are part of the Graduate School for Integration, Production and Welfare.

PhD scholarships in Sociology - Application Deadline 24 Auguest

Applications are invited for two PhD scholarships at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen and The Danish National Centre for Social Research (SFI) for appointment in October 2009, or in accordance with further agreement.

The PhD programme provides PhD students with a strong research based degree which opens for a variety of careers. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching and other forms of public research dissemination. The PhD programme can be undertaken as a three year full-time study within the framework of the 5+3 programme or as a four year full time study within the framework of the 4+4 programme.

The scholarships are part of a research initiative focusing on citizens' meetings with different parts of the welfare system in a time of structural, organisational and ideological changes. The aim of the research initiative is to study the development in different sectors of the Danish welfare state with a specific focus on the position, rights and duties of the citizens meeting "the system". The PhD projects should focus on one of the following themes, analysed in a sociological perspective:

vulnerable families and the lowest social welfare benefits;
welfare services and marginalised groups (alcohol and drug addicts, homeless persons, troubled youth, problem families etc.);
employment policy and people with mental health problems;
strategies of active labour market policy;
the health sector and the question of "free choice".

Research projects based on quantitative methods or a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods will be preferred. Applicants are invited to write a research proposal (max. 10 pages) within one of the mentioned fields, describing the aim and focus of the planned PhD project, a theoretical framework and the methods and data to be used.

Applications

Applications are welcome from all qualified applicants regardless of age, gender, race, religion, ethnic background and citizenship.
In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as a PhD student at The Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules in the "Ministerial Order" No 18 of 14. January, 2008.
An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee. When the assessment committee has finished the evaluation each applicant will receive the part of the evaluation concerning her or him.

PhD scholarships within the 5+3 and the 4+4 programme

The 5+3 PhD study programme

In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD programme the applicants must have successfully completed a master's degree when starting his or her employment. PhD students are paid salary according to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.

The 4+4 PhD study programme

Students who have completed a BSc and 60 ECTS of a master's programme can enrol as PhD students simultaneously with their enrolment in the master's programme. Until a master's degree is obtained, the grant is paid partly in the form of up to 48 state education grant portions (SU-klip) with two portions per month, partly as salary for work (teaching, presentations, etc.) corresponding to at least 280 hours of work. Payment and conditions of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). Then the student has completed the master's degree he or she is transferred to a salary-earning PhD scholarship.

make art is an international festival dedicated to the integration of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) in digital art.

The fourth edition of make art – What The Fork?! distributed and open practices in FLOSS art - will take place in Poitiers (FR), from the 7th to the 13th of December 2009.

make art offers performances, presentations, workshops and an exhibition, focused on the encounter between digital art and free software.

We're currently seeking new, innovative FLOSS works and projects: music and audiovisual performances, presentations, software demos, and installations.

This year make art focuses on distributed and open practices in FLOSS art. 'What the fork?!' is about decentralisation. Forking is the new black. Forking, copying the source code of a project and continuing work on the copy instead of the original, used to have a bad reputation. It would split a project and its developer community in pieces, leading to different, often incompatible, projects. Wasted effort, rivalry and developer fights were all associated concepts. This is history. Forking a project with the intention to compete with it is another story, but the freedom to fork enables quick implementation of features and customization, bypassing acquiring committer status, bugfix or feature request protocol, working in a distributed way, together with others but
not necessarily towards one goal, working from one source, cross-fertilising, inspiring, copying, patching, improving, experimenting, changing direction, and merging. This practice is boosted
by decentralised software development tools, such as Darcs, Mercurial and Git. It's not about quick hacks, but about creating room to experiment, letting go of the one working copy and creating a multiplicity of ideas.

Crosstalk video art festival will take place from June 25 to June 30 in Gödör, in heart of Budapest. The program for the second edition of crosstalk video art festival 2009 will be comprised by video screenings, round-tables, video installation exhibitions and a VJ night.
Although crosstalk video art festival is an international event, every year a country is invited to present a focused view over the local production on art videos. For 2009 Spain is the guest country. Every year a video collection is invited for the video screening: Antology. This year we have a selection from the video collection of MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León), Spain.

In this year's edition crosstalk is hosting three partner institutes presented in Crosstalk Invites section: FixC Cooperative, a video-, media art and experimental cimena distributor and promoter from Helsinki, Finland, VideoChannel, a video project environment from Cologne, Germany and VisualContainer, the italian video art distributor from Milan, Italy.
In cross-talks screening are presented videos based on the open call and S is a section exclusevily for students.

crosstalk will present three round-tables with professionals in the video art field, such as artists, curator, collector, concerning techniques, philosophical questions and methodology of works with subjects like: collecting videoart, technological limitations and conservation matters, Video and media art in the hungarian and international art market, presenting, installing and exhibiting videoart.

This edition will explore the dialogue and intersections between video art and other arts disciplines such as dance, theater by hosting Barbara Bañuelos Company with the show called: 90 DB and Aggtelek from Barcelona will present az installation in Labor Gallery. The vj culture is also part of contemporary video and media art, so one night will be dedicated exclusivelly for a vj maraton with 4 dj and 16 vj-s.

This years edition of creating surprising collaborations with the aim of spreading the interest in video art through a wide range of audiences, in a project linked to the city.

Applications are invited for a 4-year PhD Fellowship funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) under the Research Frontiers Programme. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Michael Melgaard in the School of Mathematical Sciences, Dublin Institute of Technology on a research project entitled "Nonlinear Equations in Quantum Chemistry".

The Summer School is designed to provide students with an overview of theories of conflict and cooperation. The focus is placed on perspectives from theories of international relations and sociology. The central questions explored in the course include: What is conflict? What is functionality of conflicts? What is the role of ethnicity in conflicts? As well as trying to answer these questions, the course will focus on the issues that hinder and facilitate cooperation. The overall aim of the course is to acquaint students with conceptual tools to critically reflect upon and analyse conflict situations and to spot possibilities for cooperation. To complement lectures and class discussions, students will have a possibility to participate in the simulation game. The aim of this exercise is not only to provide students with the opportunity to practice decision-making skills, but also to offer them a change of perspective, thereby gaining a better understanding of factors and dynamics involved in conflict situations. If you have recently finished writing a book, or have published your first book in the past year (or just feel like taking out some aggression on a publication of your choice), we invite you to celebrate by launching your work into space--or at least halfway down the block.

In addition to the catapult book launch, we're hosting a literary science fair so that you can receive proper admiration for your writing. Now is your chance to explain to the world what's so special about your fiction, poetry, non-fiction...by means of a diorama, poster, or tri-fold board. Baking soda volcanoes are welcome, colorful graphs encouraged.

Study on European information systems supporting the mobility of artists and cultural workers 2009.

The feasibility study on European information systems supporting the mobility of artists and cultural workers was published in April 2009.

This study was carried out by ECOTEC for the European Commission in the framework of the pilot project for artist mobility.

At the end of 2007, the European Parliament voted an additional line on the 2008 budget of the European Union dedicated to supporting the environment for the mobility of artists through a new pilot project.

The first element of this pilot project consisted in a feasibility study on a Europe-wide information system concerning the different legal, regulatory, procedural, fiscal and financial aspects of the transnational mobility in the cultural sector.

This study was carried out by ECOTEC Research & Consulting Ltd for the European Commission. Its aims were notably:

* to analyse the precise needs of artists and cultural workers in this respect and to provide an overview of existing information systems;

* to identify the gaps in the functioning of existing information systems;

* to make recommendations to national and European actors for remedies to fill these gaps with a view to setting up a Europe-wide system of information

We are in a connected age: real-world entities often interconnect with each other through xplicit or implicit relationships to form a complex network, such as information networks, social networks, economic networks, technological networks, and biological networks. PhDArts offers an international, high-level doctorate in visual arts and design. Each doctoral course of study comprises individual research as well as a doctoral study programme. An appropriate team of supervisors and a suitable research environment is sought for each doctoral candidate.

PhDArts is a collaboration between the Leiden University Academy of Creative and Performing Arts and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. For parts of the PhD programme they also collaborate with the Institute for Practice-Based Research in the Arts of the K.U.Leuven.

In research in and through artistic practice, the concepts of knowledge, meaning and sense are closely interwoven. The discursive, verbal component of research is important in gaining insight into and examining this knowledge. Research in art is characterized by interaction with artistic practice: it is an inseparable part of the work of the artist. With research in art (as opposed to research about art, such as art history, for instance) there is no set goal or expected result, any more than there are predetermined general procedures. The outcome of the research is completely open. This openness is a condition for conducting research in art and design.

The PhD student's research is the direct extension of his or her art practice. The outcome is therefore an artistic product, combined with a discursive product, the dissertation, which does justice to the artistic one.

The doctoral study programme is supplemental to the supervision of individual research. The programme consists of six half-day sessions and two workshops, each lasting two weeks, per year.

The candidates are expected to attend the half-day sessions throughout the entire duration of their doctoral study and to attend at least four two-week seminars over the course of their doctoral research period.

Admission and deadlines of application

Prospective PhD candidates can submit an application to the Leiden University Academy of Creative and Performing Arts or the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) in The Hague.

The entrance examination comprises:

• An assessment of the applicant's portfolio of work and research dossier. These must be submitted before April 30th or October 31st.

• A visit to a studio or exhibition and an interview. This takes place in the months of June and January.

Applicants must have a Master's of Arts Degree or proof of study at a comparable level. The final decision on admission rests with the Leiden University, which will also award the PhD.

Master in Brand Communication

Cooperation between AssoComunicazione, Politecnico di Milano and POLI.design has given rise to the Master in Brand Communication - Brand design, construction and management, with the objective of training new human resources for use in communication companies, on the basis of design skill, a high cultural entry level, and the indisputably topical nature of communication-linked questions.

The traditional profile of communication professionals is changing in order to respond to the significant changes occurring in companies, markets and brand-oriented consumerism. In order to provide an answer to this requirement, AssoComunicazione and Politecnico di Milano have launched the Master in Brand Communication in order to enhance the figure of communication consultant, creating common ground between the areas of communications and the most innovative sectors of Politecnico di Milano. The master intends to examine the contemporary scenario of change using appropriate tools, in order to provide a response to the need for coordinating strategic thought regarding brands, at the core of which lies the concept of brand
equity.

STRUCTURE OF THE MASTERS
The Master in Brand Communication is structured as follows:
- Frontal lessons, propaedeutic and specialist, run by a highly-qualified faculty combining resources from Politecnico di Milano, from communication companies and manifacturing companies. This phase will give participants knowledge of the various professional figures involved in communication, and an understanding of the logic, techniques, languages and dynamics required for activating the processes of coordination and management of communication activities that are the subject of the Master in Brand Communication; - Seminars with privileged testimonials from the world of communication, enabling participants to come into direct contact with the leading personalities in communication companies; - Project work (work-groups), in classrooms, with the activation of small groups for the development of communication projects involving meta-design analyses and a brief compilation. This part of the course will bring participants into the most design-oriented part of the master, with true communication campaign simulations and the identification of the marketing mix required to achieve the communication goals. The objective of the communication projects is the identification of strategic thought regarding the brand concept. Students' groups, working under the guidance of experts, will be competing for the creation of the best communication project. - Work-experience stage at companies associate members of AssoComunicazione and manifacturing companies. This part of the master will last approximately three months, and it will enable participants to apply the skills acquired during the course, under the guidance of experts who have been working in agencies with varying professional roles for some time and who will offer their practical advice.

The course of education provided by the Master is divided into five macro-areas:

Supplied with a given merchandising sector and a product with general characteristics, teamwork will be performed to develop a brief, market analyses, advertising andcommunication project. It thus represents the simulation of a campaign for the launch of a product by means of the synergic operation of various areas of professional activity: marketing, account direction, media planning, art direction and copywriting.

At the end of the lecture-room educational activities, the projects will be discussed and evaluated together a board of examiners who will evaluate the results in sight of the stage's insertions.

3. Work-experience stage

The work-experience stage is organised with companies who are associate members of AssoComunicazione and manifacturing companies. It lasts about three months, and it enables participants to apply the skills that they have acquired during the course, under the guidance of experts who have been working in agencies, in various roles, for a number of years, and who will provide valuable practical suggestions.

4. Empowerment
During the course, a module dedicated to empowerment will also be run, providing training in the theory and dynamic mechanisms involved in organisational and individual change, teamwork, the dynamics of interrelations, and entering the world of employment.

Summary:
The application of carbon nanotubes in structural composites seeks significant enhancement of its structural, thermal and electrical properties. Even though individual properties of carbon nanotubes are extreme, there are many difficulties in transferring such properties to the composite.

This study looks for solution to this problem by the growth of specific multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with variation of its length, structural quality and iron impurity. This study will involve the MWCNT functionalization and dispersion in epoxy resin for its application in carbon fiber composites by RTM (Resin Tranfer Moulding).

The mechanical characterization of the composites is also part of the study. The production, functionalization and dispersion of the MWCNT will be performed in the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil. The RTM process and composite characterizations will be performed in cooperation with the Aeronautics Technology Institute (ITA) and Unesp at Guaratinguetá campus.

Applicants should have a PHD in materials engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or equivalent with background in carbon nanotube composites.

PhD Studentship University College Dublin in Ireland - biophysical solvation of nanomaterials

The PhD project is to develop a new method for studying the biophysical solvation of nanomaterials. Our previous research predicted a novel Raman breathing (SBM) mode which represents a new probe/sensor of solvation. Using experiment, simulation and theory in the new project we will a) detect for the first time the SBM b) make very accurate measurements of solvation shifts c) derive nanotube-solvent interaction potentials and d) try to characterise biophysical interactions using such shifts relevant to biophysics and nanotoxicology. This project
would suit a student with a physics or chemistry background who is interested in biophysics and will be a mixture of experimental and theoretical research.

The ArtBoom Festival of art in the urban space will focus the audience's attention on the best achievements of visual arts which will be presented in Krakow's urban space – once a year in June. ArtBoom is fully dedicated to up-to-date art. It is to point Krakow out as a place of vibrant artistic dialogue where new values are established and where art is created before our eyes. The festival is a platform for meeting the latest and most valuable manifestations of Polish art with art from all over the world. A large emphasis is also applied to the presentation of most talented Polish artists. ArtBoom presents the creative output of artists involved in various media such as painting, performances, installations, objects, videos.

It also includes activities of a social nature. The theme of the Festival's first edition will be the City of Krakow itself – through their productions, interventions, and presence the artists will provoke a reflection on the position of art, they will make a peculiar diagnosis. The stimulus is Krakow: the city of culture, transformed by scores of cultural activities not necessarily related to and associated with contemporary art. A non-homogenous organism which may, but does not have to absorb, accept, grant polite interest. Crossing boundaries publicly, in a generally accessible manner each time entails the risk of being found provocative, unjustified. The festival's first edition will comprise the production of works of artists freely moving within the public space, artists whose art corresponds with and refers to the encountered reality. It covers a score of manifestations: actions of a conceptual nature, a social commentary, ironic intervention, activities with their roots in street-art.

Artists' strategies take direct confrontation with the public into account. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Google SketchUp invite amateur and professional designers to participate in a global, online initiative that asks the public to use Google Earth and Google SketchUp to create and submit designs for virtual 3-D shelters.

The competition takes its inspiration from "Learning By Doing," an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum's Sackler Center for Arts Education, which features plans, photographs, and models of shelters built by students at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. For the past seven decades, students at the school have taken on the challenge of designing, building, and living in small shelters nestled in the landscape of the school's Arizona Taliesin West campus and recently on the Taliesin campus in Wisconsin as well. Inspired by the program, the Design It: Shelter Competition opens Wright's challenge to the world by asking participants to design an ideal shelter in a location of their choice and in response to that location.

Following the competition submission period, June 8 through August 23, 2009, Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture students will select ten entries as finalists. The public will be invited to vote on the finalists online from September 7 through October 10 to determine the winner of the People's Prize. At the same time, a jury of experts in the fields of architecture and design will review all shelter submissions to choose the winner of the Juried Prize. Jury members include Martin Cox, Principal, Bade Stageberg Cox; Neil M. Denari, Principal, Neil M. Denari Architects; Cathleen McGuigan, Architecture Critic, Newsweek; Victor Sidy, Dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture; Lisa Strausfeld, Partner, Pentagram; Aidan Chopra, Product Evangelist, Google SketchUp; and David van der Leer, Assistant Curator of Architecture and Design at the Guggenheim.

The two competition winners will be announced on October 21, 2009. Prizes will include airfare and two nights' accommodation for two in New York City, behind-the-scenes tours of the Guggenheim Museum and Google offices, and Google SketchUp Pro licenses. The Juried Prize will also include a $1,000 cash award.

Center for Slovenian Literature, Public Agency for Cultural Activities and Cultural Society Badger and partners are wanting a writer for

3-weeks long residency in Kočevje
and guest appearance at Festival of young writers Urška 2009.

Writers, poets and dramatists from countries other than Slovenia are welcome. Please send your interest to litcenter@mail.ljudmila.org
before June 30th, 2009. Enclose a short CV, bibliography and a sample of your work. One person will be selected. The decision will be declared on July 31st, 2009, at latest.

The residency will take place from October 14th to November 4th, 2009. Cost free lodging and food are provided for supporting a writer, who cares for creating in a peaceful environment of a hidden European town. For October 16th and 17th selected author will stay in Slovenj Gradec as special guest at Festival of young writers Urška 2009. Travelling costs to and from Slovenia are not subject of this call.

There will be three public presentation of authors work, one in Kočevje, another in Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, and another one during the festival in Slovenj Gradec. For these occasions some sample translations in Slovenian language of author's work will be provided by organisers.

Writer in residence will be furthermore required to inscribe in the book, for which text was created during the residency, the following inscription: "This book was (partially) written in Kočevje, Slovenia, with support of Center for Slovenian Literature, Public Agency for Cultural Activities and Cultural Society Badger and partners." A copy of the book is requested for donation to the Library in Kočevje.
